    Programme structure

1st semester – Sustainable Urban Development

The overall theme of the 1st semester is ‘Introduction to climate change and sustainable supply’. Expanding cities are a challenge – how can we accommodate that growth in a sustainable way? In this context the semester project focuses on turning a green field into an environmentally friendly residential area.

2nd semester – Climate Change Adaption and Supply Infrastructure

At the second semester, you will complete a project, where you must plan an infrastructural project assignment. The project aims to provide students with the understanding of a basic concept of planning and distribution of supply lines for drinking water and district heating supply, and for a management of wastewater and rainwater.

    3rd semester – Process Engineering

The overall theme of the 3rd semester is processes in water, wastewater and energy supply systems. You will complete a project with focus on analyses and calculations of processes related to optimising an existing supply process (drinking water, wastewater or district heating).

4th semester – Urban Infrastructure and Climate Adaption

At the fourth semester, project work is being carried out to focus on upgrading of intersections in urban areas with associated design, adaptation and modelling of the supply pipelines as well as planning of the execution of selected construction constructions. The project will be conducted in a multidisciplinary manner with Danish and International Climate and Supply Engineering students as well as students from Civil Engineering.

    5th semester – Internship

During this semester, you will take part in an internship in a company. The internship is an important part of your education where you will test your knowledge and skills in practice.

6th semester and 7th semester – Specialisation, electives and bachelor project

On 6th and 7th semester, you may specialise your education by choosing elective courses within the same subject area. Alternatively, you can choose freely between all subject areas. Specialisations are e.g. Water Supply, Waste Water Supply, District Heating, all with a focus on climate change and climate adaptation.

A bachelor project concludes the programme, accounting for 15 ECTS of the full 210 ECTS.

    More information

  • As a student at the Climate and Supply Engineering study programme, you will share an academic and social bond with your class as well as students from VIA’s other engineering programmes.

Expect to meet international students from all over the world, as well as Danish students seeking an international outlook on their education.

    Learning through theory and practice

At the Climate and Supply Engineering study programme, the academic level is high, and the teaching is structured to help you learn theories through concrete, hands-on assignments, cases and projects.

The teaching primarily takes place in the classroom. Classes are based on project work with emphasis on problem-based learning, meaning that students work together in small groups, solving problems from real businesses and working with cases.

In the early stages of the study programme, your lecturers will manage your projects and project groups, but over the course of your studies, you will gradually take over the responsibility of ensuring that your projects move along as, and that the group dynamics work out as intended. This way, you have an influence on what you want to work with and how.

Lab work is an important part of the programme

At the Climate and Supply Engineering study programme, we have several well-equipped laboratories with analysis equipment. Lab exercises are an important part of the programme. You will e.g. be analysing drinking water samples, do measurements on turnover of wastewater to track the biological process of the decomposition and working on recognising soil types or stones in the GEO-lab.

Collaboration with and visits at industry partners

We work closely together with the supply industry, which makes it possible for our students to work with real-life challenges, e.g. a supply company experiencing challenges with rainwater in a new development, where you can contribute to finding a solution for the company.

This way, you learn to transfer your academic knowledge to concrete solutions. In addition, having a close bond with the industry gives our students industry-specific skills already during their studies, motivating and engaging students and preparing them for their future careers.

We will also go on excursions to visit companies in the supply industry or invite people from the industry to give lectures. This will give you valuable insight into the industry and a chance to meet engineers and learn about their projects, equipment, and work tasks. In addition, you will learn more about how different companies operate, what the day-to-day tasks are like for a Climate and Supply Engineer and what you can expect, when you finish your studies, all while building your professional network.

    Full time studies with preparation

Be aware that the Climate and Supply Engineering programme is full time and requires an average of 40 hours of studying per week, including assignments, and reading.

  • Experience the working world

Doing an internship is a great way to get first-hand work experience and gain access to the best graduate jobs.

At the fifth semester of Climate and Supply Engineering, you are required to do a 20-week internship at a company or organisation.

Your internship will also improve your employability, as work-readiness is a top priority for employers when they look for graduates to fill vacancies.

The internship has a dual purpose. You will get to know what your professional future holds while you are still preparing for it, and you will make contacts with employers within the field of your study.

    Where to go?

You may do the internship in a company of your choice in Denmark or abroad. If you are planning to work in Denmark after graduation, we recommend doing your internship in Denmark.

    Examples of internship hosts:

    • Engineering consultant companies
    • Supply companies
    • Constructing companies
    • Public authorities

    Tasks during your internship

At the internship host, you will solve tasks and assignments just like the other employees. Usually, you will be assigned to an experienced engineer, who will be able to guide and mentor you professionally.

As you build your professional skills, you will typically get more and more responsibility in the company.

    Finances during your internship

Your internship host is not required to pay you a salary during your internship, however, many companies chose to do it anyway. If you are not paid by your host and usually receive SU, you will continue to do so in your internship – both in Denmark and abroad.

    Find the right host

At the study programme, we are in contact with a number of companies in the supply sector, who employs engineers. You will be able to use our network to find a company within your field of interest.

VIA’s Career Centre is also able to help you with company contacts in Denmark as well as abroad.

  • As a fully trained Climate and Supply Engineer, you will be able to work with supply of drinking water, wastewater treatment and central heating. Climate adaption is an integrated part of the study programme, enabling you to handle the challenges of our changing climate. This could be how to tackle extreme weather conditions and ensure limited natural resources – and therefore you will be equipped to be a driving force for positive change.

Perhaps your will help handle the consequences of climate change or contribute to ensuring clean drinking water for future generations, while you or one of your colleagues treats wastewater to prevent disease and contamination of the aquatic environment. You will also be able to contribute to the work with phasing out the use of fossil fuel and convert to green sources of energy.

    Great job opportunities

As a climate and supply engineer, you will have great job opportunities. You will be able to find employment in a supply company, a consulting engineering company, in the public sector or with an environmental organisation. You can also study further and take a master's degree.

Job profiles include e.g. project manager, construction manager, environmental employee, climate coordinator and so on, depending on your field of interest and ambition.

With a Climate and Supply Engineering degree from VIA, you will hold a large set of skills. You will have engineering skills, as well as personal and professional skills, and specialised competences within water, sustainability and energy.

The opportunities are many, and Climate and Supply Engineers are in high demand in Denmark as well as abroad.
